  • What do we get out of prayer?

According to a recent LifeWay Research survey, when God answers prayer, he tends to do it in the South.
Two times as many Southerners as people in the Northeast who pray say all of their prayers have been answered.
Hmmm. I live in the South and I’m here to tell you that the survey is hooey, at least if you judge by my “God answers my prayers” track record.

  • I get to go to church!

I remember as a youngster getting to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. What a treat. Grandma would always have something baked up and there would be sweets out on the table. She always greeted me with a big bear hug.

  • Daddy, save me from my shadow

“Daddy, Daddy,” were the words I heard seconds before I felt a tightening grip on my legs as my frightened 2-year-old son, David, wanted me to save him from his shadow.

  • It's the party, dummy

You know what really irks me? When people at work don’t turn off the bathroom light when they’re done.
Our company is trying to reduce expenses and one of the easiest things to do is Turn. Off. The. Light!

  • Asking tough questions of faith

Years ago I did a funeral for a 4-week-old baby girl. It was difficult. The family had started attending our church prior to the baby being born. We had a baby shower for the mother. She really felt loved and embraced by our church.
When the baby died, she was devastated. She had questions about God allowing this to happen.

  • Who needs a refuge?

I know for me as a young girl in middle school and high school, I tried to find my comfort in things and people.
I put my hope in guys and thought that they would make me feel safe, happy, wanted and loved. What I found was that they didn’t and couldn’t fill the gaping hole in my heart.
