  • "Free" stuff always comes with a cost

    I love free stuff.
When we lived in California we lived near scads of big- box warehouse stores that always gave away free samples. Sometimes, if you got there on the right day at the right time, you could eat enough free samples and be too full to eat lunch or dinner when you got home.
I wasn’t thinking of free stuff a few Sundays ago when I stopped at a little Pentecostal church I had never visited before, even though I’ve talked to the pastor many times.
And what to my wondering eyes should appear? Free goodies and coffee!

  • The Accident

I was at my mother-in-law’s house last summer and was putting up a handrail on her steps for her.
While I was attaching the handrail, my drill slipped and the screw driver bit slipped off the screw and into my thumbnail.
    Ouch, did it hurt.
I stopped, took care of my injury and then proceeded to go back to work installing the handrail. I got the job done without any further problems or injuries.

  • Faith in Jesus, not perfection, leads to God

The word translated “gospel” in our English Bibles is simply the Greek word for “good news.”
Martin Luther, the great protestant reformer, struggled for a long time to see it as “good news.” When he was a young man near the age of 21, he was caught in a thunderstorm in which a bolt of lightning hit the ground near him.
Fearing for his life, he cried out to a saint and vowed to become a monk and follow the Lord if his life was spared.

  • Following every rule is just about impossible, but that’s OK

  • Chasing addictions is running from God

The late comedienne Gilda Radner used to say, “It’s always something.”
In this life, it’s always something. There’s always something that’s your Achilles’ heel, your kryptonite, your downfall, your master. There’s always something that holds power over you, making you bow down to it, obey it. There’s always something that you start out loving and often end up hating because it eventually crushes you.
But if you’re fortunate, it brings you to Jesus.

  • God WILL catch you if you fall

I have a friend who Trusts. God. With. All. His. Heart!
He talks a lot about faith and giving everything over to God.
Frankly, sometimes I want to smack him.
The funny thing is, although I’m not laughing, 10 years ago he didn’t have a real soul-transforming faith and he used to come to me, asking about what it means to be a Christian.
One of his big questions at the time was about the power of God. He was feeling like a dog’s chew toy, as if God and the devil were playing tug-o-war with him.
