One man is dead after a Wednesday afternoon car accident last week.

Sergio Ortega Talavera, 22, was traveling westbound on Ky. 36 (approaching Lafferty Pike) around 3:30 p.m. when the 1996 GMC pickup he was driving left the right side of the road and struck a telephone pole.

Kentucky State Police, Harrison County Sheriff’s Department and the Harrison County Fire Department responded to the scene.

“He may have been going too fast for conditions,” said KSP Tpr. Rick Saint-Blancard, Public Affairs Officer, adding that roads were wet at the time of the collision. “Weather was a factor.”

While the accident remains under investigation, Saint-Blancard said authorities believe Talavera crossed into the left lane of the highway in a left curve, then veered to the right to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

“It was a pretty big curve to the left,” Saint-Blancard said, stating that Talavera’s action of sharply veering right led to the vehicle going off the road and hitting the pole.

Saint-Blancard said Talavera was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

Alcohol is not considered a contributing factor.

Talavera was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was a waiter at El Paricuten restaurant in Harrison Square.
