A northern Kentucky man and woman were airlifted to UK Medical Center Sunday afternoon after suffering serious injuries when their motorcycle collided with the side of a Federal Express delivery van on U. S. 62.

Ronald Steffen of Highland Heights was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle east on U.S. 62 with Julie Estes of Covington as his passenger.

According to a report from Harrison County Deputy Sheriff Nathan Gasser, the two were about six miles east of Cynthiana. Steffen apparently lost control of the motorcycle in a curve and skidded into the westbound lane where a FedEx van, driven by Kenneth Rogers of Lexington, was traveling in the opposite direction.

Rogers swerved away from the oncoming motorcycle, but could not prevent the couple from crashing into the van head-on. The riders were thrown from their seat and the motorcycle was thrown into a roadside ditch.

The FedEx van went off the  highway and down an embankment, coming to rest in front of a gravel driveway.

The injured couple were flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. As of Tuesday morning, Estes had been released from the hospital. Steffen was still a patient.
