Tending the summer tomatoes

-A A +A
By Jeneen Wiche

I have some healthy looking tomato plants in the garden this year which is refreshing after last year’s diseased lot. Nothing ripe yet but all in all things look promising despite the pop-up down pours and the 90 degree weather.

We cannot control the weather but we can control what the diet of our plants. At planting time the soil was well-prepared with composted horse manure and a little organic fertilizer; and the plants were mulched with newspaper and grass clippings. Moderating soil moisture and preventing soil from splashing on the foliage goes a long way in preventing some potential tomato problems later.
