Staggs elected into 10th Region Hall of Fame

Stephen Staggs, minister of the Mt. Olivet  First Christian Church, has been elected into the 2009 Class of the 10th Region Hall Of Fame.

Staggs was a five year varsity player at Deming graduating in 1995.  He is the Deming Boys Basketball all time leading scorer with 2,058 career points. He averaged 26 points per game, 4.4  assists, 5 rebounds, and hit 90 percent of his free throws and 55 percent of his two point shots.

Staggs averaged 38.5 points per game in the 1994 District Tournament. He scored a career high 47 points in the double overtime win against Pendleton County in the championship game. The Ledger Independent and the Lexington Herald rated Staggs in the top five in the 10th Region his senior year at Deming. He was All District his junior and senior years and All Region his junior and senior years. He was on the All “A” All Tournament team and All Academic team his junior and senior years. He also made All State Honorable Mention his senior year.

Staggs works with youth in this area through his job as minister at Mt. Olivet First Christian Church and it’s youth activities. He can be found many a day and some nights playing basketball with kids at the school.

Staggs will be recognized at halftime of the championship game of the 10th Regional Tournament. He will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 10th Region Awards banquet in March.
