Bluegrass State Games
Recent Harrison County High School graduate Ross Smith and his brother Charlie won tennis medals at the Bluegrass State Games in Lexington over the weekend. Ross took first place in the 18 and under singles contests maintaining the form he used to be Harrison County’s number one male singles player last year.
Brother Charlie, a junior at HCHS, and Ross took third in the doubles competition for the same age group.
HCHS dance team tryouts
Harrison County High School dance team try-outs will be held at Rohs Opera House July 22-24.
On July 22 and 23 try-outs will be from 2 to 5 p.m.; and on July 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Ashbrook a road warrior for
Bristol White Sox
After 11 games with the Bristol White Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League J.D. Ashbrook is batting .225 in 40 at bats. The problem appears to be playing in Bristol as Ashbrook is batting.091 in his home park, but a robust .389 on the road.
The 22-year-old outfielder hit his first home run Sunday night in a game at Elizabethton, N.C., in a 5-1 loss to the Twins farm team. Ashbrook is a graduate of Harrison County High School and attended Morehead State University.
Thorobreds Dailey, Sanders to play in Midwest Classic
They may be the Blues Brothers when they get back, but the two Harrison County Thorobreds juniors are willing to risk it to play in the fifth annual Midwest Classic Showcase. The Showcase will be played on July 29 and 30 in Plainfield Ill., just north of Joliet. Seniors-to-be Logan Dailey and state tournament MVP Eric Sanders have been selected to play in the prestigious national tournament.
The two are members of the 15 class of 2011 and three class of 2012 players selected by the scouts and coaches of the area. The tournament is regarded as the most-scouted showcase in America with an outstanding rate of college placement.
The players check in for practice on July 28 and play two games on the 29th and one on the 30th. Game times are 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the 29th and 9:30 a.m. on the 30th. West Jessamine’s coach former major leaguer Jody Hamilton coaches the all star team.
Cross country practice begins July 15
The Harrison County High School Cross Country Team will begin practice on Thursday, July 15, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the old track at Ingles Stadium. Additional practices will be held on July 19, 22, 26, 27 and 29.
High school and middle school boys and girls are invited and encouraged to attend. All practices will be held at Ingles Stadium from 7-8:30 p.m. All athletes should bring a copy of their current KHSAA physical exam. For more information, contact Coach Danny Simpson at 234-9218.
HCMS mini football camp begins July 20
There will be a mini football camp for all sixth, seventh and eighth grade students who want to play football this fall for the Harrison County Middle School.
The camp will be held at Ingles Stadium on July 20, 21, and 22 from 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. All players must have a current physical to participate. There is no charge for this mini camp held by Coach Jim Carr and his staff.
Football golf scramble
The Harrison County High School Breds football golf scramble will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Cynthiana Country Club with tee times beginning at 1:30 p.m. The cost is $40 per player of $160 per foursome.
There is still a need for hole sponsors at $50 a hole.

Volleyball try-outs to begin July 15
The Harrison County girls’ volleyball team try-outs will be held Thursday, July 15, Friday, July 16, and Monday, July 19, from 5-7 p.m. nightly. Try-outs will be for freshman, JV and varsity squads and is open to any HCHS girl regardless of previous volleyball experience.

Girls’ golf team practice scheduled for July 21
