Chasteen calls state tourney

Local resident Steve Chasteen was tabbed to umpire in his third KHSAA Fast Pitch Softball State Tournament three weeks ago in Owensboro. This time, Chasteen was selected to be one of the four umpires given the task of calling the championship game(s).

He called five games through the course of the 16-team, double-elimination tournament, and was assigned second base in the first championship game between Owensboro Catholic and Louisville Mercy.

Mercy, in the loser’s bracket, knocked off Catholic in the finals, forcing a second and deciding game. Chasteen had first base in the ultimate title game that saw Catholic win, 12-2.

Chasteen just completed his 13th year of calling high school fast pitch softball. His other state tournament appearances as an arbiter were in 2002 and 2004.
