The sound of rushing waters

-A A +A

Last weekend my family went to Cumberland Falls State Park for a short camping trip.

Now, if you know me, you may be surprised that I like to camp.  In fact, I am surprised that I like to camp.
I must admit, there is less appeal in a hot, buggy, hard-floored tent than in a cool and comfortable hotel room.  And, if you have ever camped with kids, you understand how much stuff we packed in order to accommodate them.
Not only was our trunk full, we hauled a trailer filled with “necessities” and enough food to last until winter.
As we were sweating under the hot afternoon sun unpacking our “loot,” I began to giggle at how far we have come from the simple life.
When did something so simple -- like camping under the stars -- become so complicated?
After we set up camp, we went for a hike.  Ahhhhhh….now I remember why I like to camp.
Being on the hiking trails with nothing (and no one) to distract us from God’s creation, we began to relax.
As we were hiking up to Eagle Falls, we stopped to get a glimpse of the big falls (Cumberland Falls).
It was magnificent to look around and see the sun sparkling on the river and feel the sweetness of the cool mist on our faces.
As we stood there in awe, I began to notice the intensity of the sound of rushing waters as the river powerfully moved toward the fall.
It is a sound that demands attention and reverence; it is a signal to us that this majestic beauty, as calming and peaceful as it is, is also fierce and unstoppable.
In the book of Revelation, John says this about Jesus:  “His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like a blazing fire.  His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.”  (Rev.1:14)
I have heard the sound of the falls several times on previous hikes, but this particular afternoon, the Lord was revealing something to my heart.
Our God is not small, folks.  The God we serve is Mighty and Fierce. When we catch a glimpse of the true enormity of our Creator and His Love for us, we are changed forever.
Application: God is bigger than any of the problems you face today. His Love for you is powerful and protective. He wants to reveal himself to you in a mighty way. Take time today to be still and listen for His voice.  He is always listening for yours.
