Lack of available assistance could make this a difficult winter for the elderly and children living in poverty. Community Action Council is bracing for the federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to run out of funds by mid February, the earliest in more than a decade. Although the Council has several energy assistance programs, the federally funded program is by far the largest to assist families with their energy bills. Much of the funding available to help low-income families has already been spent in the months of November and December.
