This year's Harrison County High School commencement address will be given by WKYT 27 Newsfirst anchor Amber Philpott.
Philpott, the daughter of Gary and Thresa Philpott, is a Cynthiana native who graduated from HCHS in 1999. In 2003, she received a bachelor's degree in communications with emphasis in electronic media from Morehead State University.
Once she graduated, she began working at WYMT-TV in Hazard, Ky. After only 18 months there, she was able to fill in at the anchor desk at WKYT. When the three-day stint was over in Lexington, Philpott was promoted to co-anchor of the 11 p.m. newscast.
A few months later, she was again promoted, this time being tapped to deliver news at 5 and 6 p.m. every day.
In her short time as part of the WKYT news team, Philpott has been honored with a Regional Emmy nomination for a series piece on a cold case murder in Eastern Kentucky.
Philpott said she also takes pride in the fact she and her entire news department have been honored with a national Edward R. Murrow award for their continuous coverage of the crash of Flight 5191 in 2006. She was also the co-anchor for another newscast following up on the plane crash that just received another regional Edward R. Murrow Award.
In 2003, Philpott entered a new phase of her life when she married another Cynthiana native, Steve Hill. They now live in Lexington.
