Joe Pawley is the Cynthiana-Harrison County Chamber of Commerce’s December Artist of the Month. His art form is metal sculpture, which he creates using various processes of welding. Joe has been a Welding Instructor for the Harrison County ATC for seven years. During that time, he has instructed many local and neighboring counties’ students in both basic and advanced welding processes.
Pawley began welding as a junior in high school at the Breckinridge County ATC in western Kentucky. He furthered his training and skills by working his way across the country from California to South Carolina. He holds a CWE and CAWI certificate through the American Welding Society and is currently nearing completion of his degree in Career and Technical Education from EKU.
He says, “Technical welding, although important, has a tendency to get repetitive,” so he credits his metal sculpture designs as his attempt to bring free form art to welding. He hopes to play a leading role in the implementation of metal sculpture into the Kentucky Technical Curriculum. At the state level sculpture competitions last year, a student of Pawley won first place.
Pawley also enjoys drawing and spending time with his family.
Several of Joe Pawley’s pieces are on display in the Chamber of Commerce’s lobby at 201 South Main Street. For information, call the Chamber at 234-5236.
