The old courthouse will open Sunday night as an emergency shelter from the weather.

Harrison County Judge Executive Alex Barnett issued a Code Red message Sunday afternoon citing extreme weather and predicted cold temperatures as the reason for the shelter opening.

If you have contact with someone who has no place to get out of the weather tonight, contact Barnett at 588-5428. Rides will be provided by Barnett, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Harrison County Emergency Management and Harrison County Search and Rescue.

Barnett said at 5 p.m. on Sunday that the shelter will open at 6 p.m. Someone will be present at the shelter until 9 or 10 p.m. unless people arrive there seeking shelter. He said a note will be placed on the door to make contact after volunteers have left.

He noted that the shelter is open to anyone not just homeless, but those who are unable to keep their homes warm enough or for those who may lose power.

Many of the offices of the courthous are vacant, pending the renovation.

"It's not supposed to get real cold until Monday night," said Barnett. "We want to be prepared for the worse."
