* The Cynthiana Kentuckian, Oct. 30, 1969 - “Mr. and Mrs. William (Billy) Bauer, who operate a motel in Myrtle Beach, S.C. have stopped over for a visit with Mr. Bauer’s mother, Anna Bauer, Elmarch Avenue. Billy will be remembered for the journey to the west coast, accompanied by Jimmie Galbraith, Bill Conway and George Cason in an open top 1923 Ford touring car. All four members survived the trip and at last report were doing well.”

* Cynthiana News, May 30, 1867 - “Fresh Groceries on Main Street - A large and complete supply of Mackerel, White Fish, Herring, together with any amount of bacon for sale cheap at J. B. Carter’s.”

* National Geographic Society - “Frogs croak in the night. It is a sound we learn to live without in the city, but it can instantly summon a flood of memories of a country childhood.”

* Cynthiana Democrat, Dec. 31, 1942 - “Curtis Sanders of Berry announces the Department of Vocational Agriculture, Berry High School, will offer a Rural War Production Training Course at the Berry High School, beginning on Monday, Jan. 4 for out-of-school persons who have attained the age of 17.”

* Cynthiana Democrat, Aug. 6, 1931 - “Ed Topperwein, champion with rifle, pistol or shotgun, gave an exhibition here Friday afternoon with nothing short of marvelous. Topperwein came to Cynthiana under auspices of the Van Hook Hardware Co. and as a demonstrator for Winchester Arms Co. The shooting exhibition was given at Henry Oxley’s just outside the city limits, about three O’clock and an extra large crowd turned out to see it.”

* Antoine De Saint-Exupery - “Only he can understand what a farm is, what a country is, who shall have sacrificed part of himself to his farm or country, fought to save it, struggled to make it beautiful.”

* Cynthiana News, April 5, 1866 - “We would respectfully call attention to our City Council to the bad condition of our street, especially where Pleasant Street crosses Main. The gutter is so deep that no wagon or buggy can cross it with safety. Would it not be a good idea to have them repaired? Not only our city, but our county. Friends would be thankful for the improvement.”

* 1942 - “Pa Like The Cream - Ma Likes the Jar - Both Like The Price - So There You Are - Burma Shave”

Although school is now in session for many of us, there is still opportunity for some staycations. The Cynthiana-Harrison County Museum, South Walnut Street, is open on Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., for you and yours. Wasn’t that one of your intended places to visit this summer?
