Mike Reitz era will be missed

To the editor:
An important era in Harrison County boy’s basketball closes at the end of this school year with the retirement of legendary coach Mike Reitz.
The list of Coach Reitz’s professional accomplishments is a long one, including taking three teams to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) boy’s basketball tournament: Harrison County twice, and Maysville, He served as the assistant coach at Bourbon County in 1984, when that team was the state runner-up.
He was both the coach and the assistant for the Kentucky All Stars versus the Indiana All Stars. He was named to the 10th region Coaches Hall of Fame and he’s a member of the KY Association of Basketball Coaches Court of Honor.
Coach Reitz’s personal contributions to the sport are just as numerous. He set high standards for his players and associates, and his demeanor was always the same, win or lose. His great sense of humor kept his teams on track, no matter the outcome of their games. Despite his great success and numerous accolades, he was humble, acknowledging the support of assistants and faculty colleagues. He helped everyone understand that basketball is not about wins or losses - it’s about the people you meet along the way and the opportunity to influence players along the way.
