To the editor,

In June of 2006 my parents were enjoying their retirement with a trip to Las Vegas, Nev. While they were there I received a phone call from my uncle stating that my mother, Carol Smith, had been taken to the hospital. I, along with my brother and sister, flew out to Las Vegas. The next day my mother passed away.

My mother had been a stay at home mom and dedicated her life to raising her family. At the age of 50 she decided it was time to do something she had always thought of doing. She opened her own store, Carol’s Hallmark in Harrison Square Shopping Center, and became a successful business woman. One of the ways my mother repaid her success to our community was by helping HCHS seniors meet graduation expenses. Each year she would select a senior or two and allow them to choose graduation announcements and accessories. Mom would also donate 100+ general graduation announcements to the Youth Services Center each year to be used by students unable to purchase announcements on their own. These are just a couple of the ways she supported youth in our community.

Upon my mother’s death, our family immediately recognized that the best way we could honor her life was to continue with the tradition she had started. The Carol Smith Memorial Award was established. The award includes graduation announcements, cap and gown, and either a senior picture package or a year book. Last year this memorial was able to serve five Harrison County High School Seniors in need of help with graduation expenses. With the generous contributions of family, friends and this community, we look forward to being able to offer this award again for the class of 2009.

If you are a Harrison County High School Senior or parent and would like information on this award you may contact the Youth Services Center at 234-7163 for details on qualifications (financial need, grades, discipline, attendance, community service) and to obtain an application.

Contributions to the Carol Smith Memorial Award are always appreciated so we can continue to serve the students of HCHS and can be sent to:
