The Harrison County Marching Thorobreds performed at the second annual Simon Kenton Band Classic on Saturday, Oct. 6.
A solid preliminary performance placed the band at the top of Class A where it took caption awards for best Musical Performance, Best Visual Performance, and Best General Effect.
The band was in fifth place overall at the end of the preliminary round. In finals, the band had an amazing performance and jumped one place to fourth overall, beating a much bigger and very talented Conner High School Band.
“We were only .6 of a point away from being third in this contest,” said director John Merz. “We were ahead of both Conner and Westerville North (the Class AAA winner) in music performance, but fell just short on the visual end. It was very, very close.”
The scores from the color guard and percussion sections also improved, as did their overall placements. The SK Classic is a Mid-States Band Association contest where bands are classified by the number of musicians. The MSBA Class A Championships will be held at Norwood High School on Saturday, Nov. 3.
