Harrison Memorial Hospital expanded cardiology services by opening Harrison Heart Catheterization Lab.
Heart disease is very prevalent in Harrison County and the surrounding areas. Because of the prevalence, HMH recruited an interventional cardiologist in 2007, Dr. Nezar Falluji, and applied for a certificate of need for a heart catheterization lab in late 2008.
On April 27, Harrison Memorial Hospital received approval of the certificate of need from the state of Kentucky to open the Harrison Heart Catheterization Lab.
Falluji, HMH interventional cardiologist, will be the physician performing procedures. Services available at Harrison Heart Catheterization lab will include diagnostic cardiac catheterization as well as diagnostic and interventional peripheral studies and procedures.
“I am very excited to be bringing more procedures to HMH that I was previously performing in Lexington, says Dr. Falluji. This will eliminate the need for our community to travel greater distance.”
A diagnostic cardiac catheterization is a non-surgical procedure in which a thin plastic tube is introduced through an artery in the arm or leg. The tube is then advanced into the coronary arteries or heart for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes.
Falluji is one of only a few currently trained interventional cardiologists able to perform the radial (wrist) approach for the diagnostic catheterization procedure. “This new advancement in technique limits the discomfort and recovery time for the patient when compared to the traditional groin approach,” says Falluji.
The peripheral studies are an examination of the arteries or veins of the body to check for blockages or other abnormalities. This examination is frequently done on the arteries and veins of the head, neck, arms, abdomen, and legs. If blockages are found they may be treated similarly to the heart by balloon angioplasty and stent placement.
“We are committed to meeting the needs of our patients and physicians,” said Sheila Currans, Harrison Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer. “This cath lab represents the next step towards addressing the cardiovascular health of our community. This enhancement to our cardiac services will provide us with effective diagnostic and treatment capabilities for cardiovascular disease.”
The cardiac catheterization lab is located on the first floor where the former emergency department was located. The newly renovated area has a pre-op and post-op area and one room designated for the procedure. A waiting area and private conference area are also in the area. Patients will register at the HMH front lobby registration desk for the procedures.
