A group of Harrison County High School students attended the HOT (Helping Overcome Tobacco) conference in Lexington at the NorthEast Christian Church on Nov. 13.Peggy Seithers RN, Tobacco Program Specialist for Wedco District Health Department, and Brad Allison with Harrison County Schools, served as chaperones for the event.
Seventeen counties were represented by over 250 high school students. The event was sponsored by Wedco District Health Department, Harrison County’s Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy, and the Department of Public Health.
The event featured several professional speakers that spoke on the harms of tobacco use, first and second hand smoke and its effects on health. The students were also given opportunities to participate in activities that trained them to bring advocacy and leadership skills back to their communities.
A meal was served from Fazoli’s restaurant.
Every student left with a bag full of educational supplies, and several of Harrison County students were winners of the door prizes.
