(Editor’s note: This is an updated column from 2005, about a well-known and dearly loved local service dog that died this week. Charlie was a welcome guest at nursing homes and hospitals and marched in parades. This is a tribute to Charlie, who will be missed.)
Joan Chipkar has one of those kind hearts that I only dream of having.
She says there’s no such thing as a stray — dog or person — as long as she has four walls and a roof. She adopts them all, believing that all God’s creatures have a purpose.
