Wedco takes lead on grant for indoor recreation facility

By The Staff

For years, Harrison County residents have vocalized the desire for an indoor facility that would cater to Cynthiana’s recreational needs.

It appears the possibility of that facility is closer now than ever before.

Wedco health department employees are currently working on a matching $250,000 grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky that would build a wellness/activity center at Flat Run Veterans Park.

In a presentation last week to the Cynthiana City Commission and Harrison County Fiscal Court, Wedco employees told government officials that the facility would have basketball courts, a walking trail, weight equipment and a children’s activity room - all indoors.

The grant application has yet to be approved and will be submitted later this month.

But despite the hurdles that await the grant’s future, the proposal is still exciting for this community.

The facility would fulfill many concerns. The center and possible programming would give Harrison County kids something to do after school and during the summer. A walking trail and exercise equipment would encourage physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

There’s no doubt, a facility of this nature is needed in Cynthiana.

And now, thanks to the Wedco folks, that ball is rolling.
