God’s name shouldn’t be attached to personal opinions and ideas

To the editor:

Do you know why many people stopped going to church? Or why they never started in the first place?  It might be because we keep attaching God’s name to our opinions.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and their opinion is neither right nor wrong, because it is their opinion. But if there is a God (and I’m convinced there is), I wonder how he feels about us attaching his name to our opinion. We try to give authority and clout to our own ideas by throwing the G-word into the same sentence.

I don’t think it’s working and I think it’s making God sick! Our opinions morph into judgments, but there’s God name, still attached. Not only is God sick of it, it’s sickening to those of us who witness it. People say, “If that’s what God is all about, I think I’ll just stay away from him (and church).”

I’m fairly certain that the whole “God-Christ” thing was more about kindness, forgiveness, humility, and helping. And I’m quite certain that God is saying, “Stop attaching my name to your opinion.” That is one of the many ways we use God’s name in vain.

But that’s just my opinion.
