Research studies show that the rates of physical inactivity are highest in the southern region of the United States. Men’s Health in the state of Kentucky is quickly becoming a serious concern. Physical inactivity is a major reason for poor physical health for men. Kentucky is greatly affected by this lack of physical activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that in 2009, 34.6 percent of Kentuckians were overweight.
Just as the lack of physical activity is a major issue in the state of Kentucky, finding the time to be physically active can be a challenge. There are many other obligations that fight for you time and focus on a daily basis: work, friends, and family. What if you were able to combine time with your family, specifically your kids, and be participating in physical activity? Many people believe that to participate in physical activity it would require you to be away from your family and could be expensive. That does not have to be the case. You can participate in games and activities with your child and break a sweat and spend quality time with them. The new program All-Star Dads, provided by the local Cooperative Extension Office, is a program for both you and your child to encourage more physical activity.
The All-Star Dads program provides Scorecards which are important for tracking how much activity that you do with your child. For each square on the card, the program asks that you do 30 minutes of physical activity together. Although there are pictures of certain activities and suggestions on the back of the Scorecards, you are welcome to do any type of physical activity together. Try something new, a new game or activity that you have never done before. Once you have completed a Scorecard you can turn it in to be in a drawing for a great prize.
Submit one card each month, August and September, to be entered for a $100 gift card. A yard sign will be given when the first card is returned and a trophy sticker after each card turned in thereafter. You can pick up the scorecards, yard signs, and trophy stickers at the Harrison County Extension Office, 668 New Lair Road, Cynthiana, KY 41031 or call 859-234-5510 for more information.
