In 1964, Tom and Anoma Leith took their 12-year-old son to one of the first-ever organizational meetings of The First Federal Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps of LaCrosse, Wisc. Young Tom was asked to sign up for the instrument that he wanted to play. He signed up for the snare drum. Tom thrived in the environment, loved the competition and became a first-rate snare drummer, featured in front of thousands of fans that were discovering the excitement and unique entertainment at Drum Corps International (DCI) competitions.
