Despite scheduled activities in neighboring counties, Cynthiana Firefighter Richard Schwartz is hopeful for a banner crowd at the Fire Prevention Week kick-off on Saturday.

Numerous events have been planned beginning at 10 a.m. at Walmart and continuing through 3 p.m. At 3:30, the fire trucks will parade through Cynthiana coming into town from U.S. 27 South to Bridge Street to Walnut to Mill to Main and back to Station 1 on Pleasant Street.

Once back at the station, the first chili cook-off will be held in conjunction with the Cynthiana Public Library. Judging will occur around 4 p.m. Winners will be announced around 4:15 p.m. followed by a chili supper.

Contestants must pre-register by Friday at 5 p.m. at the library. It is free to enter and free to partake of the chili supper following the contest. However, donations will be accepted. Those proceeds will be used for fire prevention education materials.

Schwartz said the events at Walmart have been planned around the store’s annual Safety Day.
