The Harrison County Fillies begin regular season play at Calvary Christian on Dec. 2 so playing tough competition is a must for Coach Kim Furnish’s squad.
The Fillies traveled to Lexington Saturday to take on Scott High in the Tates Creek scrimmage.
Coach Rhonda Klette returns everyone from last year’s team that defeated the Fillies 68-55 last year plus a couple of seniors who have joined the squad.
The Fillies started out a little sloppy and had trouble dictating the tempo. They played two 15-minute quarters losing the first by four points and the second by five points.
The Fillies starting line up consisted of sophomore Madison Philpot at point guard, junior Chelsea Ingram at shooting guard, freshman Taylor Reffett, senior Haley Perkins at forward and senior Jordan Doram at center.
Furnish was particularly pleased with the play off the bench of 7th grader Madison Kellione, freshman Emma Darnell, sophomore Kayla Ford and junior Whitney Gray.
“We will look to use these girls quite a bit as the season goes along,” noted Furnish.
Doram led the scoring with 11 points and Philpot added 7. The new foul emphasis caused many fouls to be called which made getting an offense running difficult.
The Fillies were fortunate Saturday as one team scheduled to play did not come and they were able to pick up a second game.
The opponent for the second game was Lafayette, a tall and athletic team.
The Fillies played a 15-minute quarter against the Lady General varsity and another against the junior varsity.
Kellione led the junior varsity effort with some heady play and good scoring.
“I was pleased with the aggressiveness that we displayed against Lafayette, both in varsity and junior varsity,” said Furnish. “We were much sharper in both games.”
She added, “I was pleased with what we got out of the event. We (the coaches) feel like we know more about the team which is why we play preseason games.”
The Fillies will take part in the Scott County Panorama Friday playing Lexington Sayre in a junior varsity contest at 4:40 p.m. The varsity will follow immediately after the junior varsity game.
