The 38th district is just around the corner and the Harrison County volleyball Fillies are working into shape to compete for the title.
The Fillies will host the district on Oct. 9 and 10 in the Hilltop gym.
Harrison County will face Pendleton County in the second match on Tuesday evening with the winner advancing to Wednesday night to face the Nicholas County vs. Deming winner at 7 p.m.
Thursday the Fillies traveled to Mt. Olivet and came away with a 3-1 win over the Lady Devils.
The Deming squad won the first set 18-25 before the Fillies rolled over them in the next three 25-18, 25-20 and 25-11.
On Tuesday night the Fillies returned home to face the Lady Bears of Bracken County.
Again the Fillies started slowly, losing the first set 20-25 after being tied at 20 points each.
The Fillies then battled back in a close set, winning 25-21 to take the match to the third and final set of the evening.
This time the Fillies jumped out to a big lead and coasted in for the victory again at 25-21.
This score was much closer than the set actually was as the Fillies led by as many as 10 points during the contest.
“We hustled tonight and got a good win for our efforts,” said Coach Bill Faulkner. “Both Bracken County and Deming are adept at digging the ball and we certainly had to work for our points in both matches.”
Faulkner went on to point out that Bracken County is an intelligent team that could find a weakness and exploit it.
“They (Bracken County) are very good at keeping the ball in play and making you make a mistake,” he added.
The wins improve the Fillies to 10-14 on the year while Deming is 9-9 and the Bracken County girls are 11-13.
The Harrison County freshmen team won in straight sets 17-12 and 18-16 while the Fillies junior varsity lost in straight sets 21-23 and 14-21.
The Fillies next travel to Richmond on Thursday to face the 11-14 Madison Central Lady Indians before returning on Saturday for the Fillies Fall Fling.
