Fillies fall in softball regional

-A A +A
By Lee Kendall

For the second straight year, the Harrison County Fillies reached the semi-final round of the regional softball tournament, and for the second straight year they saw their season come to an end at that point.

Harrison County starting pitcher Megan Bullock was the hitting and pitching star for the Fillies. The senior hurler pounded her third home run of the season in the first inning, a two-run shot, and tossed her first career no-hitter on the mound.

In the first inning, Lorraine Dennie doubled to lead off the game for the Fillies. Laura Kendall scored her with a single. Charley Hatfield followed with a RBI single that scored Kendall and Bullock followed with her homer to give the Fillies an early 4-0 lead.

Mason County scored once in the fourth inning to narrow the margin to 4-1, but Harrison County woke up in the fifth inning to score seven times and end the game.

When we just play our game and be aggressive, then the game comes to us, said Harrison County coach Christine Garnett. We just have to play Harrison County softball. The coaches and I have believed in this team all season and I think the girls performance over the past week or two has made most people believers.

In spite of their recent outstanding play, Harrison County ran into a buzz saw on Tuesday night and were shutout by 10th Region favorite Montgomery County 11-0.

The Lady Indians took advantage of a three-run homer in the top of the first and led 4-0 before the Fillies came to bat. Playing uphill the rest of the way, Harrison County could never find any gaps in the Montgomery County defense.

Montgomery County added three more runs in the fourth inning to lead 7-0 and scored four in the fifth for the final margin.

Its not like we didnt hit the ball at all, said Garnett of Harrison Countys offensive lapse. We hit some balls hard, but right at them, and others Montgomery County just chased down. They have a really good team.

We wanted to win badly, but the girls have nothing to be ashamed of. They had a really good year winning 20 games and a district title. Hopefully, the seniors will remember the good times and successes and the underclassmen will remember this game and not want to have it happen again.
