Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a disorder that occurs when an infant is born dependent on legally prescribed or illegally obtained drugs used by the mother during pregnancy. Hospitalizations in Kentucky for newborns with NAS climbed from 29 in 2000 to 730 in 2011-a staggering 2,400 percent increase. Unfortunately, NAS numbers will continue to climb in the Commonwealth of Kentucky without increased education and support for prevention efforts.
