Eastside students win essay contest

The Cynthiana Elks Lodge recently honored three students from Eastside Elementary School for their winning entries in the 2008-2009 Americanism Essay Contest. The contest is open to students enrolled in grades 5-8 who must write an essay on the specified topic not to exceed 250 words. This year’s theme was “What Freedom Means To Me”. The students participated in Division 1, 5th or 6th grade category and each entry was reviewed by a panel of judges to determine the winners. The contest consists of district, state and national levels with the national winners receiving $1,000.00 savings bonds presented at the National Convention. The students were presented with their respective awards and pizza certificates donated by Snappy Tomato Pizza. Gracie Furnish took first place, Josh Graves-2nd place and Brady Slade-3rd place in their division. Gracie Furnish also took 1st place honors in the state contest division and was presented with the award.
