The ages 6-11 Cynthiana Gems-Sapphires have competed in five competitions since July and have finished no less than second overall in the events.
The team participates in the Universal Cheerleaders Associ-ation and the National Cheerleaders Association.  They began in July in Nicholas County where they were first place winners in their Youth Level 1 division and Overall Grand Champions for All-Stars.
The following contest was a UCA tournament where they were selected first in the Youth Level 1 division.
The third competition for Coach Samantha Shirley’s squad was in Pendleton County with much the same results.
The Gems-Sapphires were deemed to be first in Youth Level 1 and Overall Grand Champion for All-Stars.
The next competition was in Bourbon County and the only thing that changed was the site. Again the Cynthiana Gems-Sapphires were first in the Youth Level 1 division and Overall Grand Champions for Youth All Stars.
The most recent competition for the Gems-Sapphires was at the NCA Wildcard Classic in Louisville.
The local team was only one point from being national champions in their division as they finished second overall.
The final competition for the year will be Saturday, March 22, in Richmond, Ky., at Cheersport.
In May there will be a recital at the Cynthiana Gymnastics Center to give more of the local fans an opportunity to see the girls in action.
In Mid-June, Shirley and her assistants, Stacey Speaks and Jonathan Furnish, will be holding tryouts for next year’s team.
The team is made up of Reece Shirley, Cindy Barker, Sydney Furnish, McKinley Fain, Taesha Speaks, Amiyah Speaks, Kenley Tumey, Lainey Vaughn, Lexy Wright, Alexis Wilson, Brooklyn Garrison, Moshea McCoy, Trinity Brooks, Maya Dickerson, Braci Molton, Briley Cline, and Desiree Couve.
