To the editor:
I want to commend the School Board in Harrison County for allowing students involvement in choir and music. My husband and I moved here from Lexington, but have been very impressed by how many middle and high school students are involved in choir. Many studies have shown that students who are involved in music do much better in math, reading, history, geography and citizenship. A study by the U.S. Department of Education that I recently read about showed that of the “25,000 students who were tracked for more than 10 years, the students who reported consistently high levels of involvement with music, scored significantly higher on math tests by the 12th grade. This observation held true for students regardless of their parents’ income, occupations and levels of education.” I know this proved true for our youngest daughter, who attended the School for the Creative & Performing Arts. Her school continually placed highest in the state on state academic assessments, even beating out the Lexington Traditional Magnet School. Please keep up the good work and continue to support ALL the music programs in the middle and high school.
