Ann Combs held off a second-day charge by Bourbon County golf coach Sami Montgomery to win her 14th Burley Belle championship by two strokes on Thursday.
Combs took a two-stroke lead over defending champion Cynthia Powell into the last day, but Montgomery, who trailed by four Wednesday, was the big challenger on Thursday.
Combs followed her 70 on Wednesday with a 72 on Thursday and while Montgomery’s 70 on Thursday made it interesting, she couldn’t come back from the four-stroke deficit.
Powell did win the low net score, which takes handicap in consideration, with a 132.
Cynthiana had two first place finishers and one second place finisher in their respective flights. Kay Cox shot a 165 to take the first flight low gross title. Cox had an 82 on Wednesday and followed with an 83 on Thursday to win the gross score title by two strokes over Jean Vickers.
Connie Whitaker ran off by four strokes in winning the second flight gross score title. She shot a real good 80 on Thursday, which bettered her Wednesday effort of 92 by 12 strokes to win over the closest rival Zelma Rice.
