After serving 31 years as Harrison County Fire Chief, Charles Carson, Jr. passed away Monday, April 29, from cancer.

Carson, 70, spent over 50 years as a firefighter for both the Berry area and Harrison County Volunteer Fire Department.

Carson and his late wife, Peggy, started the Harrison County Christmas Project over 20 years ago where they collected and provided toys for unfortunate children on Christmas Day.

The Carson family opened their home to many foster children over the years.

“I think they quit counting after 149 children,” recalled his son, Charles Allen Carson. “They loved kids.”

Carson started battling cancer in 1976 when he was diagnosed with leukemia. Several years later he was diagnosed again with lymphoma.

Visitation for Carson will be Thursday, May 2, at Ware Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. The funeral will take place Friday at 2 p.m.

The family asks in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Harrison County Firefighters Association or The Community Christmas Project.
