The Harrison County Fire Tax District has named Charles Allen Carson as the new Harrison County Volunteer Fire Department Chief.
Carson, a member of the Cynthiana Fire Department and former assistant chief for Harrison County Volunteer Fire Department, will fill the vacant position of chief formerly held by his father for 31 years.
“I am very, very excited to have this opportunity,” said Carson. “I know I have big shoes to fill, but I am appreciative for the opportunity.”
According to Capt. James McCarty, the fire tax board finished interviews on Aug. 1, at which time Carson was recommended for the non-paid position.
“At the end of the day we wanted the best person for the job and I feel that we have that person,” said McCarty. “We felt that Charles Allen would do the best job and have the fewest growing pains during the transition.”
McCarty said he was very pleased on how the entire process unfolded and how well the board worked together during interviews.
“This was new to us since our former chief was here so long,” said McCarty.
Carson assumed all chief duties effective Aug. 1 at the conclusion of the interviews.
Carson said he plans to be more informational with the public in the very near future.
“A lot of people do not understand everything about the volunteer fire department,” said Carson. “I feel that it is my job to help people understand more about what we do and what their tax dollars are being used for.”
Carson explained that he plans to hold several informational meetings soon in order to hear the concerns of the public as well as give insight on his goals and plans for the department.
Carson has served on the volunteer fire department for 34 years, 10 of which were as assistant chief.
Employed by the city of Cynthiana, Carson is an active fire fighter for the Cynthiana Fire Department where he has served as an assistant chief for the past ten years.
The Harrison County Fire Tax Board has also filled a vacant maintenance position with the hiring of Doug McCarty at a rate of $15,000 per year. The position is being listed as a part-time position with no benefits.
