BGE offers weather application for iPads

Members of Blue Grass Energy now have access to the most up-to-date weather maps and storm alerts on their iPads.
WKYT-TV (Channel 27)’s state-of-the-art FirstAlert DEFENDER radar recently became available through an application or ‘app’ that can be downloaded to iPads via a WKYT Weather app. The weather-specific iPad app is a first for any Kentucky television station.
It’s available now in the iTunes app store, or it can be downloaded at www.wkyt.com/weather.
“It’s a whole new way for our viewers to see the weather,” said WKYT Chief Meteorologist T.G. Shuck. “Through the interactive mapping, you can zoom into your neighborhood and see the weather unfold. It’s also a great place to see the latest forecasts and even watch video versions of WKYT’s weather updates.”
The WKYT Weather app offers accurate local information for 10,000 forecast points in the continental United States and 50,000 sites around the globe.
The app is the latest development in an ongoing relationship between Blue Grass Energy and the weather team at Lexington’s WKYT-TV.
Through a partnership with Blue Grass Energy and other Kentucky Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, the one million-watt FirstAlert DEFENDER dual polarity radar was built in 2009. The FirstAlert DEFENDER is not only the most advanced live Doppler radar in Kentucky, but among the most advanced in the world.
“The greatest advantage of our dual polarity radar is the fact we are getting twice the data input over old-fashioned Doppler radar,” Shuck said. “Twice as much information during severe weather can make all the difference in the world during a changing weather situation when every minute, every second, counts.”
Cathryn W. Gibson, a spokesperson for Blue Grass Energy, agreed.
“Through the partnership with WKYT, our members have access to the most accurate, up-to-date weather information available,” Gibson said. “We want our members to be safe and informed. The iPad application is another way Blue Grass Energy is serving you.”
To access the FirstAlert DEFENDER radar on a computer, go to www.bgenergy.com and click on the FirstAlert DEFENDER icon. The Web site features school closings, current temperatures, watches and warnings, a 10-day forecast and more. The WKYT Web site also explains how to fix common problems that waste energy in homes; just go to www.wkyt.com/save.
Last fall, FirstAlert DEFENDER also became available as a download to iPhones and most Android phones.
