April Barrett, a Cynthiana native, graduated from Maysville Community and Technical College Licking Valley Campus in May with an Associate in Science degree in Registered Nursing.
Barrett passed her nursing boards June 5 and became an official registered nurse. She is employed at UK Health Care as an RN in Lexington.
Barrett received her GED in 2008. She had wanted to be a nurse for a long time, but the goal seemed so difficult and far away. In the summer of 2011, she decided to attend MCTC/Licking Valley Campus.
She said she felt it was close to home and would be convenient for her and her family. She began taking her prerequisites for nursing and worked as a work study.
Barrett applied for nursing school in March 2012 and was accepted into the RN program. It took her two years to complete the program.
“I would recommend MCTC/Licking Valley Campus because you have close bonds with people,” said Barrett. “Here you weren’t just a number. You were a person. With instructors you can establish a satisfactory relationship. They do a terrific job supporting their students.”
Barrett became a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) in the fall of 2011. She worked as a CNA at the University of Kentucky while completing the RN program at MCTC/Licking Valley Campus. She said she plans to further her education by achieving a Bachelor’s of Science degree in registered nursing.
“It was such a pleasure watching April grow and develop from a very timid and nervous person into a confident and assured nurse,” said Bruce Florence, LVC campus director. “She will be learning and growing the rest of her life, but she has had a tremendous start. We are all very proud of her.”
Barrett lives with her husband, Gary, and four children, Dallas, 12, Hannah, 8, Megan, 7, Hunter, 6.
